Coronavirus In Ohio: 729 New Cases, 4 Deaths

COLUMBUS, OH — Ohio saw a continued surge in new coronavirus cases on Monday. The state confirmed 729 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, the Ohio Department of Health announced.

Since the start of the pandemic, more than 45,000 Ohioans have tested positive for COVID-19. Over the past three weeks, Ohio had averaged 455 new COVID-19 cases per day, but health officials have confirmed at least 530 new cases per day since June 18.

While the state has seen an uptick in new COVID-19 cases, other metrics monitoring the spread of the virus have either plateaued or dipped slightly, according to the Ohio Department of Health.

Here are Monday's COVID-19 metrics compared to their three-week daily average:

  • New deaths: 4 (daily average over the past three weeks: 24)

  • New hospitalizations: 50 (56)

  • New intensive care admissions: 8 (13)

One of the reasons for the surge in new cases could be expanded testing in Ohio. The state has begun offering pop-up testing sites in portions of Ohio hit hardest by COVID-19. More retail pharmacy chains, like CVS and Rite-Aid, are offering drive-thru testing to customers.
