Potential Coronavirus Outbreak Sends Wilton High School To Remote

WILTON, CT — Wilton High School will switch to remote learning on Thursday after twenty Wilton High School students were exposed to the coronavirus, Superintendent Kevin Smith wrote in a note to families Wednesday. The school is scheduled to reopen Feb. 3.

The infection occurred at several parties and gatherings that took place over the weekend of Jan. 15, according to a news release from the town Health Department.

Those persons that have been identified as close contacts have been ordered to quarantine and all others asked to remain home until advised otherwise, according to Smith.

"We know that at least three individuals connected to these gatherings are confirmed COVID-19 positive, and a number of others have begun to show symptoms. We are very concerned about the number of individuals who were involved in these events and are concerned about the potential for greater spread in our high school and community," Smith said.

Bogle said his Office immediately began contact tracing activities relative to an alert received Tuesday night.

"Unfortunately, our contact tracers are facing some resistance from various persons attached/affiliated with these gatherings. This has slowed and hampered our efforts to identify all persons involved," Bogle wrote in the advisory.

The district and the Health Department are requesting that all families who participated in any of these events contact Wilton High School nurse's office at 203-762-0381 ext. 6227 or the Wilton Health Department at 203-563-0174 or after hours at 203-834-6260.

All athletic and co-curricular activities will cease through Feb. 2, Smith said. Athletic practices can resume on Feb. 3, and Cohort B students can return to in-person learning beginning Thursday, Feb. 4.

There was one new confirmed case of COVID-19 at WHS on Wednesday, and one more at Cider Mill School, according to the district's virus tracker. The two cases are unrelated, Smith said.
