Coronavirus In Pinole-Hercules: 167 Cases

PINOLE-HERCULES, CA — As the cumulative number of coronavirus cases in Contra Costa County continued to climb, reaching 4,852 by Monday, 90 of the county's cases since March were in the city of Hercules and 77 in the city of Pinole.

The county, which has seen 90 patients die from the virus since the outbreak began, remains on the California Department of Public Health's county monitoring list.

Under new orders that came down Monday from the state, Contra Costa as well as the other counties on the monitoring list — including Alameda, Marin, Monterey, Napa, Solano and Sonoma in the Bay Area — must close gyms, places of worship, offices in non-critical sectors, hair and nail salons and indoor malls, in addition to what on Monday became the statewide closure of all bars and all indoor activities at restaurants, wineries, movie theaters, zoos, museums and card rooms.

"Local data show that 8.04 percent of COVID-19 tests administered over the past seven days were positive, a sign that the virus is spreading rapidly in the county and that the community must take immediate steps to reduce the spread of the coronavirus and prevent our healthcare system from becoming overwhelmed," Contra Costa Health Services said in a news release Saturday.

"Other indicators show COVID-19 is on the rise in Contra Costa communities. The seven-day average number of new cases identified in the county rose from 38 on June 8 to 146 on July 8, while the seven-day average number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients rose from 17 to 54 during the same period.

"The 209 adult intensive care unit beds in Contra Costa County hospitals are on average a little more than half full on a given day, including COVID-19 patients and patients with other health concerns.

"Given the rapid spread of local cases, Contra Costa Health Services (CCHS) is concerned that the number of patients needing intensive care could quickly exceed capacity."

"Key actions to address the increase include 1) delaying the opening of additional business and activities in an effort to encourage people to stay home and avoid gatherings, 2) continuing to adhere to the State's guidance on face coverings and enforcement activities, 3) working with communities and community-based organizations to share messaging about face coverings and other prevention techniques along with the importance of testing, and 4) continuing to provide infection prevention expertise to assist skilled nursing facilities and other congregate care facilities on infection control practices and proper use of PPE."
