Coronavirus: Plymouth Closes Long Beach, White Horse Beach

PLYMOUTH, MA —Plymouth Long Beach and White Horse Beach in Plymouth will be closed until further notice due to the new coronavirus public health emergency. Plymouth Town Manager Melissa Arrighi said the beaches were closed effective immediately on Thursday, and beach sticker sales suspended, to help prevent crowds from congregating and mitigate the viral spread in town.

"We are all aware that there is a significantly increased risk to the health and safety of others when large groups gather and the town has no means of controlling the social distancing behaviors of beach patrons once they arrive," Arrighi said. "The closure of the Plymouth Beaches is not the preferred option but it is absolutely necessary since protecting public health is paramount, which means adhering to social distancing and restricting access to public places where groups might gather. Closing our beaches will put pressure on Plymouth's other outdoor areas such as recreational fields, parks and numerous walking trails, which still remain open at this point. It is absolutely critical that visitors to these areas ensure that common sense be used and to please take this pandemic seriously.

"While these other outdoor recreational areas remain open at this time, this is a situation that the town of Plymouth will be monitoring closely. We are strongly urging that visitors to these areas avoid them if they are crowded and maintain social distancing with a separation of at least 6 feet between individuals on all paths and trails and open areas. To ensure adequate social distancing and to avoid large groups from congregating, people should think twice before getting into their car and driving somewhere to recreate."

Arrighi said it is preferred that residents exercise in their yards or with walks near their houses.

"This closure is temporary and is part of all of us having to adjust to a 'new normal' practically every day," Arrighi said.
