Coronavirus Relief Loans In Tampa: Where PPP Money Went
TAMPA, FL — If you were one of the hundreds of small business owners who could not qualify for a Paycheck Protection Program loan, here's some of the competition who beat you out.
In Tampa Bay alone, dozens of companies were able to obtain millions of dollars in PPP loans by applying under different names or locations for the same limited liability company, partnership or corporation.
On Monday, for the first time, the Department of Treasury and Small Business Administration released a list of businesses and nonprofit groups who successfully applied for emergency loans ranging from $10 million to $150,ooo.
Since April 3, the federal government has granted more than $530 billion in coronavirus relief funding to 4.5 million applicants. The program was originally scheduled to end June 30 but the Senate voted to extend it to Aug. 8.
The PPP was established as part of the $2 trillion Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (Cares) Act.
From the start of the PPP program, Tampa Bay small business owners who were forced to furlough workers and struggled to keep their doors open complained they were at a disadvantage.
Much of the funding went first to the customers the banks already knew and trusted ― including large corporations.
More than 7,500 Tampa Bay businesses and nonprofits received PPP loans, including companies headed by some millionaire CEOs.
According to the National Federation of Independent Businesses, 70 percent of small businesses in the United States applied for PPP loans but only two in three businesses (72 percent of those that applied) were successful.
The NFIB Research Center cited pre-screening and an existing relationship with an SBA-approved lender as major factors in the success of those businesses that received loans.
The majority of small business owners (84 percent) who successfully submitted their application already had a checking or savings account with the bank where they applied, said the NFIB.
Most banks that participated in the program and facilitated the PPP loans were only taking applications from current customers.
Just under half of the successful applicants had an active loan with the bank and another 24 percent had a business credit card associated with the bank.
Only 1 percent of successful applicants applied at a bank with which they had no previous association.
Of the 28 percent of small business owners who were not successful, most of them (68 percent) said they were waiting for their bank to start accepting PPP loans. Nine percent said they couldn't find a participating bank. Five percent were told by their bank that it had hit its limit of accepting loans. And 5 percent found the process too complicated to proceed.
There were 205 Florida companies lucky enough to land the big money (loans ranging from $5 million to $10 million).
Among them was the Tampa branch of Morgan & Morgan law offices, which has more than 50 offices around the country. Also snapping up the big PPP loans in Florida were other attorney's offices, developers, contractors and lobbying organizations.
