Coronavirus update: San Joaquin County COVID cases up 4.6%; California cases holding steady

San Joaquin County reported 457 new COVID-19 cases and no deaths in the week ending Sunday, a slight decline from the week earlier, when it had reported 437 cases and 13 deaths. Throughout the pandemic the county has reported 211,865 cases and 2,319 deaths.

California reported 30,455 new cases of coronavirus in the week ending Sunday, from 31,010 the week before of the virus that causes COVID-19.

California ranked 31st among the states where coronavirus was spreading the fastest on a per-person basis, a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the latest week coronavirus cases in the United States decreased 7.7% from the week before, with 298,674 cases reported. With 11.87% of the country's population, California had 10.2% of the country's cases in the last week. Across the country, 13 states had more cases in the latest week than they did in the week before.

Calaveras County reported 27 cases and no deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 22 cases and no deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 9,066 cases and 133 deaths.

Within California, the worst weekly outbreaks on a per-person basis were in Kern County with 173 cases per 100,000 per week; Humboldt County with 140; and Plumas County with 128. The Centers for Disease Control says high levels of community transmission begin at 100 cases per 100,000 per week.

Adding the most new cases overall were Los Angeles County, with 7,750 cases; San Diego County, with 3,300 cases; and San Bernardino County, with 2,256. Weekly case counts rose in 39 counties from the previous week. The worst increases from the prior week's pace were in San Diego, San Bernardino and Alameda counties.

Across California, cases fell in 17 counties, with the best declines in Los Angeles County, with 7,750 cases from 9,158 a week earlier; in San Francisco County, with 505 cases from 1,599; and in Kern County, with 1,561 cases from 1,903.

In California, 252 people were reported dead of COVID-19 in the week ending Sunday. In the week before that, 169 people were reported dead.

A total of 11,296,777 people in California have tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began, and 96,217 people have died from the disease, Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the United States 96,699,237 people have tested positive and 1,062,564 people have died.

California's COVID-19 hospital admissions staying flat

USA TODAY analyzed federal hospital data as of Sunday, Oct. 9.

Hospitals in 18 states reported more COVID-19 patients than a week earlier, while hospitals in 15 states had more COVID-19 patients in intensive-care beds. Hospitals in 29 states admitted more COVID-19 patients in the latest week than a week prior, the USA TODAY analysis of U.S. Health and Human Services data shows.
