Coronavirus: Texas Students MealFinder Map Launched

AUSTIN, TX — With schools closing statewide due to the new coronavirus outbreak, anxiety was heightened among children reliant on the free meals provided for the low-income segment. But on Friday, the state's agriculture department helped ease concerns with the launch of a searchable map for families to find food in their communities.
In a collaborative effort among the Texas Department of Agriculture, the Texas Education Agency and the governor's office, the Texas Students MealFinder Map enables parents to locate local education agencies (LEAs) offering meals. The map includes the address of each facility as well as days and times meals are served.
Launched on Friday, March 20, the map is available on the TEA website. local education agencies hoping to add themselves to the list are asked to fill out an application through the Texas Department of Agriculture's (TDA) website to be included in the map. The Texas Department of Agriculture then will collect the information to share the data on the ever-expanding map.

Since its launch, the map has been continually updated as more meal sites are added across Texas, according to the office of the Texas governor. Schools can request guidance on how to fill out the application by emailing: SquareMeals@TexasAgriculture.gov.

"I am grateful for our local education agencies' commitment to their students by providing meals to families as our schools remain temporarily closed," Gov. Greg Abbott said in a prepared statement. "The State of Texas urges our local partners to complete this application through the Texas Department of Agriculture to ensure accurate, up-to-date information is available for Texas families."
Patch tested out the ease of navigation to the virtual map, securing information quickly after an address directing families to input their address was input into a field. For good measure, the map also contains locations for meal pick-ups in Louisiana, Tennessee, Virginia.
Gov. Abbott on Friday ordered closure of all Texas schools — along with bars, restaurants and other facilities — as a way of promoting "social distancing" to avert the spread of the respiratory ailment now known as COVID-19. Originated in China before growing into a global pandemic, COVID-19 is caused by a member of the coronavirus family that’s a close cousin to the SARS and MERS viruses that have sparked outbreaks in the past.
