Coronavirus In Venice, Mar Vista: 458 Cases

VENICE, CA — Coronavirus cases continue to rise in Venice and Mar Vista as health officials share updates that a technological snafu with state testing led to some underreporting of new COVID-19 cases.

California's state COVID-19 board has the following message: “Due to the issues with the state’s electronic laboratory system, these data represent an underreporting of actual positive cases in one single day.”

There are 458 total coronavirus cases—210 reported cases in Venice and 248 cases in Mar Vista—and seven deaths reported in Venice and Mar Vista as of Wednesday morning, according to LA County health data. Last week, there were 188 cases in Venice and 223 in Mar Vista.

To date, the county has reported 4,758 coronavirus deaths and 195,614 confirmed cases. That puts LA County on track to pass 200,000 cases before the end of the week.

These technological flaws in the state's electronic laboratory system have led to an under-reporting of coronavirus cases in Los Angeles County for at least two weeks, health officials say, prompting outreach to individual testing facilities to verify results.

According to the county Department of Public Health, the issues with the state lab have impacted the county's reporting of positive cases and efforts to conduct contact-tracing of confirmed patients. But the issues are not believed to have caused any delays in people being notified of their test results.

News of the reporting issues came Tuesday, on a day the county announced another 57 deaths due to the virus, although one of those fatalities was announced Monday by health officials in Long Beach. Long Beach and Pasadena, both of which have their own health departments, each reported one additional death Tuesday.

To date, the countywide coronavirus death toll is 4,760.

The county on Tuesday also reported another 1,901 new virus cases, while Long Beach added 261 cases and Pasadena announced seven, pushing the countywide total since the start of the pandemic to 195,882.
