Coroner identifies man who died in hit-and-run accident in Peoria

PEORIA − A Central Peoria man was identified as being struck by a vehicle that then drove off over the weekend.

John Fasig, 52, of West Reservoir Boulevard, was identified through a collaboration between the Peoria Police Department and the Illinois State Police, said Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood. Through a search of law enforcement fingerprint databases, a match was confirmed independently of each other.

Initially, officials weren't sure if it was Fasig, who was missing his bottom teeth and had no ID or wallet on his person, Harwood said. The coroner said on Tuesday that several tips came in to his office and that helped the process.

The collision occurred around 2:13 a.m. Sunday near the intersection of Sheridan Road and Corrington Avenue. Fasig was found lying in the street unconscious, Harwood said. An autopsy on Fasig indicated he suffered multiple blunt-force trauma injuries and died instantly.

A bicycle was located nearby. He was declared dead at the scene at 2:50 a.m. Sunday.

Semone Roth, a Peoria police spokeswoman, said the matter is still under investigation. No arrests have been made.
