Coroner identifies Pekin man, wife who died after wreck in rural Morton

PEORIA − The Peoria County coroner announced Wednesday that a Pekin man and his wife died after a two-vehicle collision in rural Morton.

Coroner Jamie Harwood said 84-year-old Harold J. Mitchell died at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 3 at OSF HealthCare Saint Francis Medical Center after he was rushed there following a crash Nov. 29.

His wife, Patricia Mitchell, 82, died at the scene of the crash, which occurred at the intersection of Harding and Washington roads in Pekin, according to Harwood and Tazewell County Coroner Charles Hanley.

A preliminary autopsy indicated Harold Mitchell’s cause of death was severe and multiple blunt force trauma injuries.

Little information about the accident has been released. A call to Tazewell County Sheriff Jeff Lower was not immediately returned. The collision remains under investigation by the Illinois State Police and the Tazewell County Sheriff’s Office.
