La Salle rising junior Cameron Kerkhoff died tragically Wednesday, July 6.

The Butler County Coroner's Office confirmed this morning that the 16-year-old boy who died in a car crash with a semi tractor-trailer in Fairfield Township Wednesday was Cameron Kerkhoff.

Kerkhoff, a rising La Salle High School junior and football player from Colerain Township, died of multiple traumatic injuries, the coroner said.

Head football coach Pat McLaughlin described Kerkhoff as a hard worker who always had a smile on his face.

"He did everything you asked him to do," McLaughlin said. "It's just hard to put into words right now."

Fairfield Township police said Kerkhoff was driving a 2009 Toyota Corolla when he struck the semi head-on in the 7400 block of River Road at about 4 p.m.

Investigators said the Toyota was headed west around a curve between U.S. 27 and Georgetown Road before the wreck and went left of center.

The Toyota went off the side of the road and emergency personnel said Kerkhoff died at the scene. Police said he was not wearing a seat belt.

The driver of the semi was uninjured.
