Coroner: Traffic accident victims died from blunt force injuries

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The men killed Friday afternoon and early Saturday in two traffic accidents died from blunt force injuries, Tippecanoe County Coroner Carrie Costello said after their autopsies Tuesday.

Phillip Miller, 69, of Lafayette, died when his motorcycle rear-ended the stopped car in front of him on Tippecanoe County Road 300 North. The accident happened at the intersection of County Road 725 East. Miller was pronounced dead at the scene.

His manner of death is listed as accidental, pending toxicology reports, Costello said.

Joel G. Rivas, 29, of West Point, died in a crash just south of West Point at the curve on Tippecanoe County Road 700 West. His northbound car left the right side of the road and rolled. Riva was not wearing a seat belt and died from the injuries he suffered in the accident.

His manner of death also is also listed as accidental, pending toxicology reports, Costello said.

Toxicology reports take about eight weeks to complete, she noted.
