Corpus Christi ISD announces Carroll football coach Juan Rodriguez to move into new role

Corpus Christi ISD announced Friday that Carroll head football coach and athletic coordinator Juan Rodriguez will move into a new role with the district.

The district did not specifically announce the role Rodriguez would be in, stating in a release it will be announced at a later date and he will step down from his job at Carroll on Feb. 7.

Rodriguez has been the head coach at Carroll since 2018 when he took over from A.J. Martinez, who took a job with the University Interscholastic League. Rodriguez compiled a 2-37 mark in four seasons leading the Tigers, and also helped bring some stability to a program that had three head coaches in three seasons.

Rodriguez said the move came after conversations with district administrators over the last few weeks, culminating in Rodriguez moving to a new role.

Rodriguez added he will likely be assigned into an administrative role with the district as he has multiple master's degrees and was also thinking about one day becoming a superintendent.

"It wasn't bad conversations with administration but just felt it was time for maybe me to consider a different role," Rodriguez said.

Corpus Christi ISD Senior Director of Athletics Brenda Marshall said the district was looking at going in another direction with the position, and that Rodriguez "is a great guy and worked hard at Carroll."

Marshall said the job will be posted next week and said there is not a specific timetable for making a hire.

"We want somebody in here as soon as possible that can spend time with the kids and decided whether they want to do spring (practices)," Marshall said.

Rodriguez initially came to Carroll in 2017, and he moved into the position as head coach in 2018. The Tigers finished winless in 2018, 2019 and 2021, and were 2-7 in 2020.

Rodriguez said his tenure at Carroll "was full of ups and downs, and I was really excited about coming in. We had one real off-season, and in our second year the kids really started to buy in and then the pandemic hits, and something we had to deal with."

This season's Carroll squad had multiple injuries, and the program was working to come back from the opening of Veterans Memorial in 2015, which significantly decreased Carroll's enrollment. A new Carroll campus is scheduled to open in the fall of 2022.

“We thank Coach Rodriguez for his service as the Tigers’ athletic coordinator, and we know he will continue to be an asset to our district,” said Superintendent Roland Hernandez said in a statement.
