Corpus Christi police: 16-year-old hospitalized after 'gunfight' with officer
A 16-year-old boy who was injured after allegedly shooting a Corpus Christi police officer over the weekend remained hospitalized Monday afternoon.
Around 3 p.m. on Saturday, officers responded to the 6100 block of South Padre Island Drive near Mattress Firm for a report of a stolen vehicle that had crashed in the parking lot.
Police Chief Mike Markle said three suspects fled and a foot pursuit ensued. One of the officers chased a suspect around a building into the back where the suspect produced and fired a handgun, striking the officer. The officer then fired his weapon, injuring the suspect, a news release stated.
The suspect was hospitalized and identified as a 16-year-old boy. His identity was not released by officials.
A 16-year-old boy and a 19-year-old man were arrested by the Nueces County Sheriff's Office. The police department did not identify them.
The officer, whose identity has not yet been released, was taken to a hospital for treatment and is expected to recover, according to a release. He was placed on paid administrative leave in accordance with department practice and policy.
