Corpus Christi police, Del Mar College: Active shooter threat at Heritage Campus a 'hoax'

Reports of an active shooter at Del Mar College's Heritage Campus Thursday morning were deemed a hoax, according to Corpus Christi police.

The hoax is the second in three weeks, following a false active-shooter report at Collegiate High School on Del Mar College's Heritage Campus on March 23.

Del Mar College was one of several schools across Texas that received hoax calls reporting mass shootings Thursday morning. Other schools included Texas Wesleyan University in Fort Worth, Baylor University in Waco and Galen College of Nursing in San Antonio, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported.

Around 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Del Mar College posted and sent out an alert asking all to avoid the area or shelter in place as local police and campus security investigated a "possible active shooter" situation.

At 10:47 a.m., a Del Mar College alert stated the campus had been cleared by police and the situation was reported as a hoax.

The college said in a statement that the police department received a call about a shooter on the campus and coordinated with Del Mar College security to clear the campus.

The initial call came in around 10:23 a.m., a news release from the police department stated. Officers searched the campus and found no evidence to suggest an active threat or that a shooting occurred.

"We can confirm that there is no threat to the school and there are no injuries," the release stated. "We can also confirm that this call was a hoax, the source of the call is currently being investigated."

A false report of a bombing, fire, offense or other emergency made to a college or university is a state jail felony.
