A Corpus Christi police officer and a male suspect were hospitalized Saturday after a shooting on South Padre Island Drive near Mattress Firm.

CCPD Chief Mike Markle said a Nueces County sheriff’s officer called their dispatch line around 3 p.m. following a report of a stolen vehicle.

Officers were dispatched to assist and arrived as soon as the vehicle wrecked into a parking lot on South Padre Island Drive.

“When our officers arrived, a foot pursuit ensued where three suspects fled from the stolen vehicle,” Markle said. ”An officer chased one of those suspects around a building into the back where the suspect engaged in a gunfight with our officer. The suspect opened fire on our officer and our officer returned fire.”

Markle said both sustained gunshot wounds and were transported to a local hospital. Conditions weren't released, but Markle said the officer went into surgery.

The two other suspects, a 19-year-old male and 16-year-old juvenile, were apprehended. Markle said there are no more outstanding suspects or danger to the public.

The wounded officer will be placed on paid administration leave as per policy with CCPD.
