Corpus Christi recognized as Music Friendly Texas Certified Community

Corpus Christi has been designated as a Music Friendly Texas Certified Community by the Texas Music Office Friday.

Gov. Greg Abbott announced the recognition in a release Friday.

“Music is key to the Texas brand and is deeply rooted in the cultural traditions of our great state," Abbott said in a release. "With support from the Texas Music Office, the Texas music industry supported more than 192,000 direct and indirect permanent jobs and generated more than $26 billion in economic activity statewide in last year. Together, we will continue to work alongside local leaders in Corpus Christi and across every region to ensure our communities have the tools needed to create even greater opportunity.”

The Music Friendly Texas program, introduced in 2016, seeks to foster music business-related economic development and job creation in Texas cities and communities.

Corpus Christi joins 43 other Texas cities with the certification, including Austin, El Paso, Houston, Port Aransas and Victoria.

To commemorate the certification, a free ceremony will be held Friday, Sept. 1 during the city's monthly Art Walk event in the downtown area. The event will be renamed to "Music Walk" in honor of the recognition.

Corpus Christi Mayor Paulette Guajardo said she is proud the city's "vibrant music scene" is getting the recognition it deserves.

“This designation honors our rich musical heritage and fosters opportunities for growth and collaboration within our arts community," Guajardo said in a release.
