Corpus Christi's Boar's Head and Yule Log Festival returns for 39th year

After a two-year pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic, First Christian Church announced the return of its Boar's Head and Yule Log Festival.

The event, celebrating its 39th year, will be held Saturday at the church at 3401 Santa Fe St. Performances are scheduled for 3, 5 and 7 p.m.

Each hourlong pageant will include a chorus and orchestra of 50 providing music from the period.

Admission is free, but donations of nonperishable food items will be accepted on behalf of the "Good King Wenceslas" fund and given to the Food Bank of Corpus Christi.

The First Christian Church started holding the festival in 1982. The festival recreates the feel of a "joyous feast" in an English manor with all characters donning costumes worn by royal and common Englishmen from the 1350s.

In a release, festival Chair Trey McCampbell said he has been with the festival from the beginning.

"It is very participatory, because the audience is involved, singing along with the carols," McCampbell said in the release. "And it is very visual because the people are surrounded by the cast moving on and off the stage, up and down the aisles, all around them. We have people leaving in tears because they are so moved by it."

The ancient Renaissance festival came to be after a tale was told during a feast at Oxford about a student's victory over a wild boar. The present-day event is a result of an amalgamation of several celebrations turned into a procession of dances, music and traditions.
