Coronation Street has a new villain roaming the cobbles, with long-standing character Gary Windass recently turning to the dark side.

Not only was he uncovered as the factory roof saboteur last month, meaning that he was the one responsible for Rana Habeeb's death, but this week has seen Gary kill loan shark Rick Neelan too, leaving him with another victim on his conscience.

As all soap fans know, no character can get away with murder forever (most of the time, anyway) and so actor Mikey North is already looking ahead to the fateful day when Gary will inevitably leave the cobbles – although he hopes that moment is still a good few years away yet.

"I'd stay here forever if that was an option," Mikey told The Daily Star Sunday. "However, I am aware that with this type of storyline, whether it be two or three years, it will come to an end.

"I will be devastated when it happens but I would rather it be this way with some great storylines."

In the meantime, Gary is also currently embroiled in a love triangle with his ex-girlfriend Sarah Platt (Tina O'Brien) and her new love interest Adam Barlow (Sam Robertson).

In the interview, Mikey admitted that he loves Gary and Sarah as a couple and revealed that he cried real tears when he and Tina filmed their characters' break-up scenes, particularly as it involved Gary turning violent with Sarah.

"Sarah is definitely the love of Gary's life," Mikey added. "Those scenes when I had to throw her around, they weren't easy. It took me a while to get my head around it and I was in tears.

"I couldn't stop crying for a while after that. I never cry. I couldn't tell you the last time I cried. That was particularly bad. It turned out to be more than we both expected because of the emotion of it all."

And it looks like all the love triangle drama is going to rumble on for a while yet, with Mikey sharing that soap bosses are taking inspiration from the classic Corrie feud between Adam's grandad Ken Barlow and his love rival Mike Baldwin.

"There's going to be a nice little triangle there for a while," Mikey said. "They've billed it as the new Ken v Mike from back in the day.

"There's a scene coming up where we have a proper ding-dong in the pub. Adam's sniffing around and with Rick's body buried in the woods he really doesn’t need it. He starts winding Gary up, and he says, 'Listen, don't push me Adam, you've no idea what I'm capable of'.

"When we filmed those scenes we were told to take a look back at those old Ken and Mike arguments. It's about recreating all the classic stuff and the rivalry, which is brilliant."

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
