Coronation Street spoilers follow.

Coronation Street's Ed Bailey will find himself reaching his limit next week, as the arrival of his father Sarge puts him in a very difficult position.

Ed's gambling addiction has recently come to the fore once again, and he has been finding it increasingly difficult to keep his betting under wraps after beginning to gamble again.

In scenes airing next week, Ed is shocked when his dad (played by Desmond's star Ram John Holder) unexpectedly arrives early for a visit.

When his brother Ronnie suggests that they all go for a big family meal out and insists that he and Ed will pick up the tab, Ed secretly panics about his financial troubles. Having already taken out a payday loan, Ed quickly scans the racing pages to find a new bet to place.

As the Bailey family gathers in the Bistro for their reunion meal, Ed surreptitiously watches the racing on his phone to keep a track of his bet.

When Sarge starts to make digs about Ed's business brain, Dee-Dee quietly explains to her new partner Joel Deering that her grandad thinks they lost their house due to a bad business decision, rather than Ed's gambling issues.

When he loses his bet, Ed sweats about landing in even more financial trouble. Ronnie pays for the lunch and tells Ed that he can give him half of the cash later, worrying Ed even more.

Sarge soon makes himself very much at home, to Ed's annoyance. When Sarge later admits that his business is struggling and he needs to borrow £2k from his sons, Ronnie assures him that he and Ed can lend him the money. Ed is forced to mask his rising panic.

Later in the week, Sarge returns to No.3 laden down with Christmas presents. He explains to Ed that they didn't cost much, but that he couldn't see his family go without during the festive season.

How will Ed respond to the increasing pressure he is feeling?

Corrie producer Iain MacLeod recently revealed more about Ed's sad story to Digital Spy and other media in a press call, calling it "a huge unexplored storyline".

"On the surface it's very fun with the addition of the dad, but underneath it all, Ed's problems are spiralling and mounting," he explained.

"It culminates in Ed hitting rock bottom shortly before Christmas. In an effort to keep the wolves from the door, he's forced to do something extremely upsetting and commit a really awful betrayal."

Actor Trevor Michael Georges, who plays Ed, has also spoken about Ed's upsetting storyline, saying that he doesn't "think that guilt will ever leave him" after he lost his family's former home.

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
