Coronation Street's Summer Spellman will face more distress next week, when she feels let down by her new love interest, Aaron Sandford.

Last month, Summer (Harriet Bibby) collapsed in Victoria Gardens and went into a diabetic coma, an incident which also resulted in her guardian Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank) discovering the extent of her eating disorder.

Billy encouraged Summer to attend a diabetes support group with him after her collapse and, although Summer was initially reluctant, she was pleased to meet Aaron at the group and exchange numbers with him.

In new scenes airing next week, Summer reveals to Aadi Alahan (Adam Hussain), who has been helping to keep an eye on Summer, that she has joined a diabetes support group.

Aadi later suggests to Summer that they could give their relationship another go after they enjoyed a brief romance last year, but Summer admits that she has actually fallen for someone else – Aaron.

When Summer and Aaron meet up just the two of them, Summer feels close enough to him to open up about her bulimia. Aaron is clearly taken aback by the news and Summer begins to worry that she might have scared him off with her honesty.

Later in the week, the pair meet up again in the café and Aaron delivers bad news to Summer. He assures her that he is in no way judging her, but that he reckons it would be best if they don't see each other outside of the support group anymore.

Disappointed, Summer heads home to her bedroom and looks at her reflection in the mirror, feeling that she hates what she sees.

Later in the week, she tries to phone Aaron but her call goes straight to voicemail.

Could there still be hope for Summer and Aaron?

Corrie boss Iain MacLeod promised at the beginning of this year that Summer's story "is going to be one of our most important stories" of 2022.

"It's going to be very long-running, nuanced and heartbreaking to watch this incredibly promising young woman disintegrate," he said. "But in the best tradition of our storytelling it will have a redemptive ending."

Coronation Street airs these scenes in the week commencing May 9 on ITV. The show also streams on the ITV Hub.
