Corsets have long divided opinion. They can be seen as symbols of female oppression or of women’s right to choose. Take politics out of the equation and corsets are simply great over- or under-layering pieces—which is something to keep in mind when dressing for the upcoming Spring shows. Among those in favor of these figure enhancers are influencers, Vogue staffers, and designers from Simone Rocha to Zac Posen.
On the Fall runways, as on the street, the corset proved itself to be a versatile garment. Exposed corsets, à la Like a Virgin-era Madonna, were seen at Dolce & Gabbana and Olivier Theyskens. Tomo Koizumi showed a front-laced cincher above ruffled tutu-y shorts that recalled Moulin Rouge’s Satine or a painting by Henri Toulouse-Lautrec. Chitose Abe showed a hybrid bandeau-utility bag cum corset at Sacai; while Zac Posen’s flowing gown evoked a Shakespearean queen. Corsets clearly rule.
