Corsica-Stickney's Avery Broughton suffers second ACL injury in two years
May 3—CORSICA, S.D. — Corsica-Stickney's Avery Broughton suffered her second ACL injury within the past two years, this time in her right knee, according to Broughton via Twitter.
Broughton sustained the injury in the first quarter of an AAU basketball game, playing in South Dakota Attack's first weekend tournament at Iowa State University in Ames.
The junior just finished a Class B first-team all-state season, filling the stat sheet averaging a double-double of 18.5 points and 10.2 rebounds, while compiling 4.3 assists, 2.5 steals and 2.3 blocks per game in 26 games played.
Broughton, the University of South Dakota commit, suffered an ACL tear in her left knee during her sophomore year on Jan. 21, 2021, in a road win against Ethan. After that surgery, Broughton was on a nine-month recovery chart but was cleared from physical therapy two months ahead of schedule.
In preparation for another offseason of rehab, Corsica-Stickney's head coach and mother Lorisa Broughton said they don't want to put a timetable on Avery's return for her senior year of basketball, and she'd rather allow her body to decide when she's fully ready to play again.
"Her goal is to work hard and see if she can make it back for the majority of her senior season, but we also have to think about her college aspirations and be ready to go at that level too," Lorisa Broughton said. "The goal right now is to attack rehab hard and go from there."
