Corvette raffle to help document, preserve history of landmark building

WHITE PIGEON – A fundraiser to help document and preserve the history of a landmark building in White Pigeon is underway.

As a way of raising funds to aid with the task, Tasty Nut Shop building owner Union Hall Block Building Inc. is staging a raffle for a 1972 Corvette Stingray. Tickets are $100 each and 1,500 tickets will be sold. The drawing will take place Dec. 16 at White Pigeon Township Library.

The winner has the option of $25,000 instead.

Attempts to save the Tasty Nut Shop building in White Pigeon have ended and the historic building is set for demolition early next year.

The building is slated for demolition in March 2024, but Union Hall Secretary Patricia Ort said an effort is being made toward a historical-preservation measure.

“Preserving the history includes hiring an architect to make detailed drawings of the site, gathering artifacts, collecting official records, interviewing local residents, creating an archive and publishing a book preserving every possible detail of the (building),” Ort said. “The 501(c)(3) may also produce educational materials for use in teaching future generations about the building’s history.”

Ort said consideration is being given to ways of using the lot once the building has been razed. Regardless of what Union Hall does with the space, it will require proceeds from the fundraiser, Ort added.

Ort emphasized that no proceeds from the raffle will be dedicated toward the cost of the building’s demolition.

“We are dedicated to preserving the 167-year history of the Union Hall Block Building even though we were not able to raise the $3 million needed to repair and restore the site,” she added.
