College of the Sequoias' Jose Cuello goes up for two points against Columbia in a Central Valley Conference junior college men’s basketball game on Wednesday, January 4, 2023.

With one College of the Sequoias basketball team crowned champions, the other is closing in on a title as the men and women complete their regular season schedules this week.

Men's basketball

The COS men’s team claimed a second consecutive Central Valley Conference title (three if the COVID-shortened year is counted) with two wins last week. The Giants, 23-3 overall and with a 12-0 conference record, host rival Fresno City College Wednesday at 7 p.m. and Reedley Friday at 7.

It will be Orange Out night against FCC, with the first 150 fans receiving a COS orange T-shirt. Fans are encouraged to wear orange.

Fresno is 19-5 overall and tied for second in the CVC standings with a 9-3 mark.

Coach Dallas Jensen’s Giants have won 18 games in a row, 22 conference games in a row and 26 of their last 27.

Sequoias continue to be ranked No. 6 in the state and No. 3 in Northern California.

Women's basketball

Women’s coach Ray Alvarado claimed his 300th career victory at the community college level last Friday as COS defeated Taft 87-27.

A huge game is on tap Wednesday when COS hosts Fresno at 5 p.m. The Giants beat the Rams 76-72 on their home floor in the first round, snapping a 17-game FCC winning streak.

COS needs a win to claim the undisputed conference title, which would be its fifth championship in the last six seasons. Also at stake is high seeding and home-court advantage for the upcoming state playoffs. Fresno is 23-3 overall and 9-1 in conference play.

Sequoias ranked sixth in the state and No. 4 in NorCal, has won 20 conference games in a row and 24 of its last 25.

The Giants will also host Reedley Friday at 5 p.m. to conclude the regular season.

Softball

The Giant softball team has a busy week and will travel to Ohlone for a Saturday twin bill.

COS is 3-3 after splitting two games last week, defeating Cabrillo and losing to San Joaquin Delta.

Baseball

The baseball team has a hectic week, hosting four home games. Sequoias will host Golden West in a three-game series Friday at 2 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m.

The Giants are 2-6 overall after dropping two games at Cuesta last weekend, and a third was rained out.

Equestrian/Swimming-diving

Both teams are idle this week. The equestrian team will next compete in a regional meet at Stanford, Feb. 25-26, while the swim and diving teams are back in action Feb. 24-25.

Women's tennis

Women’s tennis won its season opener 7-2 over Sierra last week. Their next competition will be at home on Feb. 18, hosting American River, and Feb. 20, hosting Glendale.

Track and field

The track teams will compete in the Fresno Pacific Sunbird Invitational meet Saturday.
