COS sports notes: Giants baseball collide vs. Reedley College in three-game series

College of the Sequoias’ baseball team has a chance to gain ground on league-leading Reedley College, as the Giants and Tigers will play a three-game series this week.

The weather-adjusted schedule has the Giants hosting the Tigers Thursday at 2 p.m. and playing at Reedley Friday and Saturday.

COS, 12-12 overall and in second place in the Central Valley Conference standings at 8-4, face the Tigers who are 7-1 in conference and 16-4-1 overall. Reedley has won 10 games in a row.

Softball

The Giants will be at Porterville Thursday and host San Mateo in a non-conference doubleheader Saturday at noon.

Sequoias won three games last week to improve to 14-6 overall and 2-2 in CVC play.

Women's tennis

Coach Martin Herrera’s team has already clinched its second consecutive league championship with a 7-0 mark and is 10-1 overall.

COS will play its final conference match Thursday at Porterville and will also have a non-conference match at Bakersfield College Friday.

Swimming/diving

The COS swim teams are scheduled to host their only home meet of the season Friday − the Sequoias Invite meet beginning at noon.

Track

The Giant teams will be split this weekend for competition, as part of the squad will go to the Pasadena Relays Friday and part will go to the Gary Shaw Open Meet Saturday at Hartnell College in Salinas.

Basketball

COS sophomore Terri Miller has been named the State Athlete of the Month by the California Community College Sports Information Association.

Earlier, Miller had been named co-MVP of the conference and was also named to the All-State team.             Sequoias won its second consecutive conference title with a 14-0 mark, had a 22-game winning streak, was 27-4 overall and reached the state tournament (Final 8).
