COS sports roundup: Catch up on basketball, volleyball, soccer news

College of the Sequoias men's basketball posts pair of wins

The COS men’s basketball team won twice this past week, with their first win coming on Nov. 3 96-45 against American River College, and their second against Palo Verde on Nov. 4 with a final score of 98-59.

In both games, starting guard Javohn Garcia led the team in scoring with 19 points. Tyjean Burrel would follow him on both nights as well, scoring 13 points against ARC and 15 against PVC.

After the game on Nov. 4, head coach Dallas Jensen spoke on the energy of his team going from the first game to the second, “I actually really liked our energy and engagement last night, I thought tonight we were a little bit flat, but I thought we picked it up as the night went along.”

Jensen would continue with, “The thing with this group right now is that they haven’t been playing with each other for a long time. We had a lot of injuries that had a lot of guys out, and so we’re just starting to get reps together as a unit. So it’ll take some time, and we’re going to have some ups and downs over the next few weeks, but as we continue to progress and play with each other on a daily basis we’re going to get pretty good.”

COS women’s basketball wins prestigious Delta Tournament to open season

The COS women’s basketball team has won all three of their first three games during the San Joaquin Delta College Tournament, with the first against College of the Redwoods 103-57, the second against Laney College 70-62, and finally against Moorpark 79-76, on Nov. 4, 5, 6, respectively.

Against Redwoods, guard Geizzle Jones (Bullard) led the team with 20 points scored in the 23 minutes they were on the court. Alana Roberts (Sierra Pacific) followed up with 18 points in 26 minutes, as well as Maria Dias with 16 in 28 minutes played.

Maria Dias led the team in scoring in the game against Laney College, scoring 18 points. Camila Barreno and Alana Roberts both put up 15 points for themselves, and the three largely made up the scoring on the night.

The women’s team will play at home on Nov. 18 in the COS Crossover against Riverside City College, at 7:30 p.m.

COS men’s soccer looking to finish conference strong

The COS Men’s Soccer team played twice last week, losing against Merced College 2-1 on Nov. 1 and tying 1-1 on the road at Clovis College on Nov. 4.

In the game against Merced, striker Ernesto Pacheco (Redwood) scored the only goal of the game at the 79-minute mark, putting him at five total on the season.

Against Clovis, Joshua Aguirre-Ramos (Orange Cove) scored the second goal of the week and the only one on the day to bring his season total up to 11, leading the team by a wide margin.

COS women’s soccer routs Porterville, ties Reedley College

COS women’s soccer won both of their games last week, routing Porterville 11-0 on Nov. 1 and scraping by conference rival Reedley College on Nov. 4.

Against Porterville, Idania Macias (El Diamante) scored a hat trick with three goals, followed by Litsy Munoz (Mission Oak) and Nikki Licon (El Diamante) who scored two. Players Kelany Arellano (Golden West), Gissel Mora (Mission Oak), Elvira Garcia (Tulare Union), and Marycruz Nerto (Lindsay) each padded on one more goal for the team for the day.

In the game against Reedley, it was a much more tightly contested matchup, The deciding goal was shot in at the 30th minute by Garcia.

COS women’s volleyball continues hot streak with win over Taft

The COS volleyball squad won their third game in a row on Nov. 4 with a 3-0 win on the road against Taft college.

Outside hitter Mia Gilcrest (Redwood) recorded her 500th kill of the season last game, soundly putting her at the top of the leaderboards in all of California for total kills at 504 as well as kills per set with 5.6.

The COS volleyball team currently sits at 20-7 overall on the season, 13-2 in CVC play, and owns the 13th ranking in the state.
