Costco Limits Meat Sales In Metro Atlanta As Shortages Continue

ATLANTA, GA — Like Kroger, Costco is also limiting the amount of meat customers can buy at one time. An economist says that shoppers can also expect to pay more.

Kennesaw State University economics professor Roger Tutterow tells WSB that he believes people will see a price increase as the shortages continue across the nation.

“The magnitude of the price change depends on how drastic the shortages become,” Tutterow said. “And I think you will [see] some upward pressure on prices, but I think the politics and the branding of having really high prices will not be desirable.”

The retailer posted on its website that fresh meat purchases are limited to no more than three items per shopper. That’s beef, pork and poultry products.

“Costco has implemented limits on certain items to help ensure more members are able to purchase merchandise they want and need,” they said. “Our buyers and suppliers are working hard to provide essential, high demand merchandise as well as everyday favorites.”

According to America's largest food union, the UFCW, more than 20 U.S. meatpacking plants have closed at some point during the last two months, which has reduced pork and beef production.

Tyson Foods is expected to slow down its meat production, according to several reports.

On Monday the meat company reported a decline in income. Net income fell by 15 percent for the second quarter, ending March 28, compared to the same period the previous fiscal year, the company reported.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Tyson Foods has had to close several plants and slow production as hundreds of workers test positive for the virus.

"We have and expect to continue to face slowdowns and temporary idling of production facilities from team member shortages or choices we make to ensure operational safety," Tyson said in a statement.
