'Who could ask for anything else?' Veteran honored on his 95th birthday
Mount Dora resident John “Papa John” McCrary, a World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War veteran, was surprised on his 95th birthday last week with a community drive-by parade, a flyover and a special gift that brought him to tears.
McCrary said his return from the Vietnam War was a thankless homecoming, which is why during this celebration he was presented with an official Vietnam Veteran “welcome home” lapel pin.
“I have the honor to be the first to welcome you home, Master Chief,” Veteran Liaison Jeremy Caldwell said. “We are all so grateful for your service to your country.”
McCrary, who usually has sharp quips at the ready and a big smile on his face, broke into tears and unbelief that all this was happening for him.
“Oh, wow,” McCrary said. “I really appreciate you all. I don’t know what else to say but thank you.”
Members of the Mount Dora Police Department, Lake County Sheriff's Office and Lake County Fire Rescue led the drive-by parade in front of his home, followed by people in the community who honked and waved signs, some even handing him gifts.
Tavares resident Robin Heddinger heard about the event and created a Quilt of Valor, which she presented to McCrary.
“Thank you for my freedom,” Heddinger said as she gave it to McCrary.
Born in the midst of the Great Depression, McCrary joined the Navy at 17 and faced many challenges. He first became a Seabee, and later was stationed in the Philippines, Korea and Guam.
Throughout his 27 years of service, he was a part of the Underwater Demolition Team Six, a precursor to the infamous Seal Team Six, and was tasked with testing nuclear bombs, exposing him to significant radiation, but earned him the title of Master Blaster.
At 95, McCrary recalled his life and had one piece of advice for those who celebrated with him.

“Listen to the man that’s in charge,” McCrary said as he pointed up. “You really don’t think about how old you are until you get there. With friends like you guys, who could ask for anything else?”
