AMES — With Brock Purdy in his final stretch as Iowa State’s starting quarterback, the question now is who will replace him when he’s gone.

Quarterbacks run in the Purdy family, and Brock’s younger brother, Chubba, recently entered the transfer portal after a redshirt freshman year at Florida State. Unfortunately for Iowa State fans, it doesn’t look like Chubba will follow in his brother’s footsteps.

“I don’t think that’s going to be an option for him,” Brock said on Tuesday. “He wants to go and do something on his own, create a little path of his own thing.”

Regardless of his brother’s decision, Brock says he’ll support whatever decision Chubba makes. For now, Brock’s focus is on the Cyclones’ three remaining games this season, starting with Texas Tech on Saturday.

Texas Tech (5-4, 2-4 Big 12) is sixth in conference standings, with Iowa State (6-3, 4-2 Big 12) two spots above. The Red Raiders have a few good wins this season, including a 38-21 win over Houston, No. 17 in the USA Today Coaches Poll.

Here’s what Matt Campbell said about Texas Tech and more on Tuesday:

Don’t count out Texas Tech

Campbell and his team know that Iowa State can’t count out any opponent, regardless of standings. A prime example is what happened to the Cyclones at West Virginia two weeks ago. Texas Tech is no different.

“Even just from afar, watching this Texas Tech team early in the season, there’s a sense of purpose,” Campbell said. “I think the reality of it is this is a really good football team. This is a team that’s proven to be a very good football team.”

The Red Raiders can beat Iowa State, but rather than focusing on what Texas Tech can do, Campbell’s is confident in his team’s abilities to pull off a much-needed win late in the season.

Iowa State alumni in the NFL

Minnesota Vikings rookie Kene Nwangwu burst onto the professional football scene last weekend with a 98-yard kickoff return touchdown against the Baltimore Ravens. When asked about the fourth-round draft pick’s highlight-reel moment, Campbell also mentioned Los Angeles Rams wide receiver and Iowa State alumnus Landen Akers.

“I talked about glue (guys) in our program a lot,” Campbell said. “Those guys played on every special team. Those guys did all the hard things. … (NFL teams are) looking for guys that can do their job when it’s on the line. I think those two have certainly proven to do it really well. And they are shining examples for our football team.”

Inside Xavier Hutchinson's confidence

“The one thing that I would say about Xavier is, boy, he’s a confident football player,” Campbell said. “‘X’ is one of those guys that’s worked for everything he’s achieved. I think he feels really confident that even if something bad happens in a game … he can get himself back in the moment, because he does have great confidence in what he does and how he’s prepared to do what he does.”

Hutchinson is second in the Big 12 with 686 receiving yards, and fifth with five touchdowns.

Mike Rose injury update

Rose was back in the lineup against Texas last Saturday. On Tuesday, he shared that it was mainly his rotator cuff that had been bothering him after taking a few hits in the Oklahoma State game. He missed a game for the first time in his college career when Iowa State traveled to West Virginia.

After last weekend, Rose feels good about playing through the end of the season.

“The biggest thing is just getting strength back,” Rose said Tuesday. “They did a good job with me last week, just trying to ease me back into it. Hopefully, as time keeps going on, I can be out there as much as I want to be.”
