Could Fayetteville see snow again this weekend? Here's what could happen.

Fayetteville could see another chance of snow heading into the weekend, though weather models Wednesday were not certain about how much.

According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, there is a 60% chance of precipitation Friday night, as temperatures will dip below the freezing mark near 30 degrees.

“This event most likely is either a rain or snow type of event,” NWS-Raleigh meteorologist Aaron Swiggett said Wednesday. “We’re not particularly looking for a mixed sleet or freezing rain event.”

Swiggett said it looks like rain is likely for Friday evening, and there is a chance for a brief transition to snow.

The NWS forecast says that the chance is likely after 9 p.m. Friday, and Swiggett said precipitation is expected to move out by 7 a.m. Saturday.

Though the NWS’ hazardous weather outlook says that “confidence in details is low at this time," the NWS-Raleigh Tweeted on Tuesday evening that “confidence continues to increase for accumulating snow Friday night through early Saturday.”

Swiggett said there have been inconsistencies with models to indicate how much snow could fall, but areas with the greatest chance of higher totals are farther north and east, north of the Interstate 95 corridor toward southeastern Virginia.

Fayetteville stands a 58% chance of receiving 1 inch of snow or more between Friday, Jan. 28, 2022, and Saturday, Jan. 29, 2022, according to a National Weather Service-Raleigh model.

“It’s going to be tough for Fayetteville to see much,” he said. “I don’t think it’ll be close to the 4 inches seen last week.”

According to the NWS forecast, precipitation amounts could be between one-tenth to a quarter of an inch.

As of 7 a.m. Wednesday, one NWS winter weather forecast said that Fayetteville has a 72% chance of receiving one-tenth of an inch of snow or less and a 58% chance of seeing 1 inch or more.
