Close to 1 million people chose to become U.S. citizens through naturalization in fiscal year 2022, according to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

The number of new citizens — 970,000 — is the highest number of naturalized citizens in almost 15 years, according to Sharon Scheidhauer, spokesperson, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

It takes awhile to become a U.S. citizen. Applicants must meet certain eligibility requirements and go through an interview process which includes four components: reading, writing, civics, and the ability to speak English.

The civics test is an oral test and the immigration officer will ask the applicant up to 10 of the 100 civics questions from the study material found online. Applicants are encouraged to use the answers provided.

An applicant must answer 6 out of 10 questions correctly to pass the civics portion of the naturalization test.

Some answers change because of elections or the state in which the applicant lives.

Candidates who are 65 or older and have been living in the United States as a lawful permanent resident of the United States for 20 or more years can study just the 20 questions (on the online study test) that have been marked with an asterisk.
