Colin Murray took over the job presenting Countdown earlier this year after Anne Robinson stepped down from the position, and now he's speaking out about how things have changed.

The former Weakest Link host presented the long-running show for around a year, and there were dispelled rumours of tension between her and her fellow Countdown stars, Rachel Riley and Susie Dent.

Speaking of what's changed since he joined, Colin clarified he'd never actually met Anne but shared while speaking to The Mirror: "The atmosphere has changed and that's huge."

Colin previously stepped in as a temporary host when Nick Hewer had to take time off due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nick then left the show, with Anne taking over as host, though Colin admitted he was asked to be a temporary host again.

"I said, no. I couldn’t bear the thought of just being a one-night stand again," he said. "It would have been professionally heartbreaking. I think my words were, ‘You’ve got to give me a run of three months.'"

However, he didn't think he'd got the job as more time went on without an offer.

"I was so down when we recorded the first episodes of series 87," he said. "I thought, if they haven’t given it to me now, they’re not going to."

Thankfully, things changed when Channel 4's head of daytime called him with an offer. "And that was it. I’ve got a two-year contract and in December we got the highest ratings in 10 years," he said.

When Robinson stepped down from the show, she explained that she wanted to spend more time with her family. "I have grandchildren, a large garden and a home in New York, all deserving more of my attention," she said at the time.

Countdown airs weekday afternoons on Channel 4.
