The country’s largest tribally owned bank revealed its new brand last week, officially becoming Sovereign Bank, which will affect the bank's 10 branches throughout Oklahoma, including along Northwest Expressway in Oklahoma City.

Previously known as First National Bank and Trust Co., the bank is owned by the Citizen Potawatomi Nation and is based in Shawnee. After the acquisition of The First State Bank in 2021, the bank's assets grew to more than $800 million, and officials said it needed a new brand that better reflected the bank's indigenous ownership and expanded services.

"We are excited about this new stage in our bank's life to position us for continued growth and success," Sovereign Bank CEO Bryan Cain said in a statement last week. "It's our mission to empower our communities, and we strive to give customers unparalleled personal service."

Sovereign Bank is set to retain the same ownership and management. But other aspects of the brand, including its logo and "Freedom to Dream" tagline, have been updated to highlight the bank's identity and continued innovation.

"It's the combination of how our ownership is set up, 10 locations across Oklahoma, and asset size," said Kathrynn Cavanaugh, director of marketing and communications at Sovereign Bank. "The main differentiator is that we are tribally-owned, meaning that Citizen Potawatomi Nation owns us, which is different than being a minority-owned bank of someone who is indigenous."

The new logo depicts the Potawatomi medicine wheel, which symbolizes the tribe's expansive and comprehensive presence around the globe, officials say.

Apart from Shawnee and Oklahoma City, the bank's current Oklahoma locations include Canute, Edmond, Granite, Holdenville, Lawton, Mangum and Midwest City.
