As some of the biggest names in music are booked for Charlotte’s stages this summer, PNC Music Pavilion is set to host Jason Aldean on Thursday, Aug. 10.

If “Dirt Road Anthem” or “She’s Country” have been permanently added to your playlist, Aldean’s “songs of small-town living, love and loss” are sure to give Charlotteans a show.

Aldean’s ‘Try That in a Small Town’ controversy

In his recently released song, “Try that in a small town,” Aldean sparked controversy with polarizing lyrics such as, “Got a gun that my granddad gave me. They say one day they’re gonna round up. Well, that shit might fly in the city, good luck.”

Aldean’s song has also been accused of being “pro-lynching” or filled with racist “dog whistles.”

“Cover me up” singer Jason Isbell spoke out via Twitter against Aldean, who isn’t mentioned as one of the song’s writers. “Dare Aldean to write his next single himself. That’s what we try in my small town,” Isbell said.

Aldean’s music video for “Try That In A Small Town” was also shot in front of a courthouse in Tennessee where Henry Choate, a Black 18-year-old, was publicly lynched in 1927 by 350 white men after being accused of attacking a 16-year-old white girl, The Washington Post reported.

Aldean’s video was pulled from Country Music Television, The New York Times reported. CMT did not offer The Times a reason for pulling the video.
