Country singer Riley Green to play Players' Military Appreciation Day show

Riley Green will play at the Players Championship's Military Appreciation Day concert Tuesday on the 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass. Here's what you need to know about the show.

Ceremony comes first

Tuesday is Military Appreciation Day at the Players. It's not a competition day for players, but fans should expect to see some of the pros getting in a little practice before every stroke counts on Thursday. A Military Appreciation Celebration will be held at 4:30 p.m. in front of the 17th hole grandstands. Greene's show follows on a stage set up at water's edge.

It's free for active-duty military

The show is free for anyone who holds a Players ticket for Tuesday. All active duty, retired, reserve and National Guard members verified through the military identification system, plus one dependent, can get free tickets for Tuesday or Wednesday while supplies last by going to theplayers.com/tickets. Veterans are eligible for discounted tickets. Regular tickets for Tuesday are $30.

Return to country

The Players usually brings in a country act for the Military Appreciation Day show. Tim McGraw, Luke Combs, Toby Keith, Luke Bryan, Dierks Bentley and Darius Rucker have all played on the 17th hole in the past. The exception was 2020, when electronic dance music act the Chainsmokers played a loud, raucous show that didn't really fit the venue (2020 was, coincidentally, the year the tournament was suspended due to COVID). Greene, the Academy of Country Music's 2020 New Male Artist of the Year, is a return to form.

Not Green's first Jacksonville show

Green is no stranger to playing shows in the Jacksonville area, although a golf fairway might be new for him. He opened a show for Luke Bryan at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena during Florida-Georgia weekend last year, opened for Jason Aldean at the arena in January 2020 and for Dierks Bentley at Daily's Place in 2019. He's actually from Jacksonville, Ala., and was a quarterback for the Jacksonville State Gamecocks.

Green's a hot ticket right now

Green's career-trajectory is definitely on the upswing. He made news last month when a fan brought a dog with a mullet haircut to one of his shows and when he sold out a show in Wyoming in just 40 minutes. He's heading out on tour this year supporting Combs, playing shows in front of stadium crowds in Detroit, Nashville, Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Minnesota and Kansas City.
