McDONOUGH COUNTY — The health department has reported a spike in new COVID-19 cases following the Thanksgiving holiday.

So far this week, 101 new cases have been reported. Of these, 71 were reported Monday, 21 cases were reported Tuesday, and nine were reported Wednesday.

To date, the county's fully vaccinated population stands at less than 44 percent of residents.

According to Superintendent Patrick M. Twomey Tuesday, 32 people in the Macomb school district have tested positive for COVID-19. He said the test results came from testing on Nov. 15 of all the school buildings. Not all buildings were tested Thanksgiving week. He gave the following breakdown of cases by school:

  • McArthur: three students tested positive; no staff.

  • Lincoln: seven students and three staff members tested positive

  • Edison: seven students and one staff member tested positive

  • Macomb Jr./Sr. high: 10 students and one staff member tested positive

Each building gets tested once a week, he said. Testing of all buildings has resumed this week. Results for each building's tests come within 24 hours, he said.

Patrick Osterman of McDonough District Hospital said that as of Tuesday, seven COVID-19 positive patients have been hospitalized.

McDonough county has a rate of 190 new COVID-19 cases per 100,000 people, according to the IDPH website.
