Maryland GOP governor candidate files complaint with state elections board

Kelly Schulz's campaign for Maryland governor filed a complaint to the state elections board against the Democratic Governors Association on July 11, accusing the organization of misleading Maryland voters "in violation of current Maryland law" and of falsely registering its activities with the state elections board.

The campaign accuses the organization of violating Election Law Article, Annotated Code of Maryland, § 13-601(a), which states "a person may not willfully make a false, fraudulent, or misleading statement or entry in any campaign finance report or other filing that is under oath and is required by this article."

The Republican candidate Schulz is a former state secretary of commerce.

In late June, Schulz's campaign had accused the Democratic Governors Association of spending millions of dollars to prop up "fringe Republican candidates who cannot win general elections."

The candidate in reference to the Maryland primary election is Del. Dan Cox, R-Carroll/Frederick.

"Dan Cox perfectly fits the mold of the other candidates they have sought to support," said Sam Malhotra, treasurer for the Kelly Schulz campaign, in a news release.

Malhotra said that the campaign seeks immediate action by the state elections board, including the secretary of state and the Office of State Prosecutor for further investigation. Malhotra claims the Democratic Governors Association has submitted a false statement under oath to a government body by purchasing ads that are in opposition of Cox, but are designed to promote his campaign.
