A couple argued over sleeping dogs, but a chicken and duck got the worst of it, cops say

An argument over where dogs should sleep ended with a dead chicken, a dead duck and a Fort Myers home left a wreck, authorities say.

Jocelyn St. Laurent, 33, was arrested June 7 on child neglect and aggravated assault charges after deputies say she attempted to run over a man with her car. She was later booked into a Lee County jail. She posted her $30,000 bond last Monday.

The skirmish began a week ago Sunday when St. Laurent and her boyfriend, whose name the Lee County Sheriff’s Office withheld, disagreed over dogs sleeping in the bed. As tensions grew, she threw a glass jar of apple juice, which shattered at his feet, according to the arrest report.

St. Laurent, along with her daughter, then left the residence and got into her gray 2006 KIA Sportage. She then drove toward the man who was standing on the porch, the report says.

The man escaped injury but St. Laurent hit the home’s pillar and screen door. She also fatally struck a duck and chicken, according to the report.

“It was an accident that the animals were killed,” the deputy wrote in the report. “They were the suspect’s pets and the suspect was attempting to just run over the victim.”

When deputies made contact with St. Laurent, she claimed to have not hit the house. She explained the only reason she had driven toward the house was to get in between her 15-year-old pit bull and the boyfriend.

The dog, who she alleged had been thrown off the porch by her boyfriend, appeared to be OK.

A search of St. Laurent’s criminal history revealed several convictions for traffic infractions, including no proof of insurance, driving with expired tags and having a suspended license.
