Couple leaves terrifying voicemail after New Zealand volcano eruption: 'It's been a total nightmare'

An American husband and wife, who were honeymooning in New Zealand when a volcano erupted off the coast, left a voicemail for a family member that left her "terrified."

Janet Urey got the call in the middle of the night from her son, Matt, who was with his wife, Lauren.

Lauren’s mother, Barbara Barham said that Matt’s mother told her about a voicemail he had left saying "there had been a volcano eruption and they were burned very bad," People reported.

"He said he would try to call as soon as he could, but talking and making phone calls was difficult," Barham said. "His hands were so badly burned it was hard for him to make a phone call."

"Terrified. Any horrible emotion you can imagine," Urey said of the message on Today. "I didn't even listen to the full message. I hung up and quickly called him back, and at least got to hear his voice that he was at the hospital, but his hands were severely burned he really couldn't use the phone."

Matt and Lauren were both airlifted to different hospitals to treat their burns, The Washington Post reported.

Rick Barham, Lauren Urey's father, told NBC News that she suffered severe burns on over 25 percent of her body and Matt is in the intensive care unit with burns on more than 80 percent of his body.

"It's been a total nightmare," he added.

Both mothers are planning to fly to New Zealand to be with their children, according to The Washington Post.

Around 30 survivors are being treated at burn units around the country, a Ministry of Health spokesperson told NBC News.

Matt and Lauren were among the nine Americans on the uninhabited island when the volcano erupted, Today reported. Six deaths were confirmed after the White Island volcano erupted Monday. Another eight people are believed to have died, according to the Associated Press.
