Couple offers Corvette as reward for dog missing on Hilton Head. Here are the details

An Atlanta couple whose dog has been missing for almost five months on Hilton Head Island is pulling out all the stops to get her back with what they acknowledge is a “crazy” idea.

In a last-ditch effort to find their beloved family pet, a Whippet mix named Marley, Derek and Alex Kirchner are offering a reward of $4,000 — and possibly Alex’s 2016 Corvette Stingray.

Marley is still missing.

“It’s a little crazy,” Alex acknowledges.

The cash reward is meant for somebody who finds Marley. The car reward is specifically for somebody who found the dog and kept it. For that person, Alex says, “For $1, we’ll sign over the title.”

The Corvette, Alex says, may “entice somebody who already has her,” Alex said.

On Sept. 6, Marley ran from a house that Derek and Alex Kirchner were renting on Wanderer Lane off North Forest Beach Drive, near the Coligny Plaza Shopping Center.

Alex, 30, has returned to Atlanta with their 18-month-old son, but Derek, 34, is still on the island, living in a local’s guest house for free. They’ve blown through savings trying to hunt down 4-year-old Marley. In November, they brought in tracking dogs from North Carolina. Derek also has set up surveillance cameras on trails he hopes will capture a photo of the big-eared mutt with dark patches around the eyes. While Derek is on the ground in South Carolina, Alex is handling social media and crank calls from Atlanta. But nothing’s worked.

“Were coming up on five months and financially — Derek is going to have to come home and we’re going to have to manage things from afar,” Alex said. “But we’re not going to give up.”

Meanwhile, the search goes on at Hilton Head this weekend.

At 10 a.m. Sunday, Carolina Coffee & Crumbs is Hosting a Marley Parade.

Residents will meet up, then put Marley fliers on cars and drive around.
