Couple plans to open full-service dog kennel in Allegheny Township
Feb. 2—A canine-loving couple are moving ahead with plans to open a full-service dog kennel in Allegheny Township.
Dan and Lindsay Janoski live on 15 acres along Indian Hill Road.
Lindsay Janoski grew up with fond memories of her grandparents' former dog kennel, Mar-Ken-El in Allegheny Township.
"I've had dogs my whole life," said Lindsay. They have three dogs of their own.
Seeking a side business on their property, the couple
decided to pursue opening a kennel. A Lower Burrell native, Lindsay is a preschool teacher. Dan works as an electrical lineman.
"I've always wanted to have a kennel. It's a dream of mine," Lindsay said. "Just talking with people, there's a need."
The Janoskis were unanimously granted a special exception last week from Allegheny Township zoning officials. The property is zoned residential/agricultural.
Next up is the permit process with the township, and the Janoskis hope to welcome dogs to the yet-to-be-named kennel in the fall.
Kennels are required to be licensed by the state of Pennsylvania.
Greg Primm, township manager, said he's happy to see people using their property to their benefit. He wished them success with the
small business.
"There seems to be an ongoing need for dog care these days," he said.
Construction on the block building is expected to begin soon, with Dan pitching in as much as he can with construction.
"It's on our property, so we can provide 24/7 monitoring," Lindsay said.
When finished, the kennel will accommodate up to 10 dogs — one dog per stall.
Allegheny Township Supervisor James Morabito said he contacted the Janoskis to help them navigate the hearing process after reading about their zoning meeting in the Tribune-Review.
"I'm extremely happy that Dan and Lindsay are continuing a family tradition. This clearly means so much to them. They're so dedicated to keeping this in Allegheny Township," Morabito said.
"This is just one more essential business to add to the growing lists of businesses that have opened in the township since 2022. I would like to thank them both for including me as a true proponent of their efforts and wish them success."
Daily boarding rates will be around $30 per day.
Dog owners will be required to provide proof of all vaccinations and registrations.
"I have no issue taking a dog with medical needs," Lindsay Janoski said. "I grew up with a dog that was a diabetic and required insulin shots."
