Couples Who Sizzle and Fizzle Onscreen

Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone

In The Amazing Spider-Man 2: Rise of Electro, premiering on Friday, Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone star as Peter Parker and girlfriend Gwen Stacey. And while Garfield is merely pretending to have superhero strength and agility, he and Stone are actually dating IRL. The romance began in 2011 on the set of The Amazing Spider-Man, when Garfield was bitten by something more powerful than a radioactive spider: love. Stone and Garfield have been linked ever since. The notably private Stone went on Good Morning America this Tuesday, and addressed her relationship, letting it slip that, “I love him very much.”

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt

This story has it all: love, betrayal, secrecy, and intrigue. And no, we’re not talking about Mr. and Mrs. Smith, although Brangelina’s torrid affair is rumored to have started on the set of the assassin drama. When superstars Angelina and Brad met, their chemistry quickly outshined the film’s numerous shootouts and explosions. Unfortunately for them (but fortunately for TMZ), Brad was already married to Jennifer Aniston, who was famous for being America’s sweetheart, and for debuting a series of enviable haircuts.

The tabloid battle between the sweet blonde and the brunette vixen played out like an issue of Betty and Veronica on crack. Aniston and Pitt divorced in 2004, and Brangelina went public in 2005. In the years since, the duo has donated millions of dollars to charity, raised their six children, and continued to work as actors, directors and activists. In 2008, Jolie told The New York Times that she couldn’t wait for her children to watch Mr. and Mrs. Smith, because “not a lot of people get to see a movie where their parents fell in love.” Gross.

Freida Pinto and Dev Patel

In 2008’s surprise hit Slumdog Millionaire, the sweet, super-smart boy from the wrong side of Mumbai gets the girl. In this case, the girl is the extraordinarily beautiful 29-year-old Freida Pinto. The boy, 24-year-old Dev Patel, managed to catapult this relationship off-screen, clearly benefitting from a wave of big ear popularity (looking at you, Prez). Six years later Patel and Pinto are still together and going strong, proving that the couple that executes a flawless Bollywood style dance routine together, stays together.

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner

Back in 2003, Ben Affleck was co-starring in an immensely popular relationship with Jennifer Lopez, while Jennifer Garner was in the process of divorcing her Felicity co-star Scott Foley. By 2004, J. Lo was old news, and Garner and Affleck debuted Bennifer 2.0. Apparently, the two were caught off guard by their chemistry on the set of 2003’s Daredevil. It’s hard to argue with this love-at-first-take story, since no one’s actually seen Daredevil. Luckily, the couple’s off screen collaborations have been far more successful than their 2003 flop: the stars married in 2005, and have had three children together.

Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus

In 2009, a former Disney child actor and aspiring pop star met a young Australian hunk on a movie set. They instantly fell in love, and he proposed to her with a huge diamond ring, but it wasn’t enough—in time, the ambitious songstress realized that her fiancée was holding her back from the hard partying, twerktastic life she was meant to live. Faster than you can say “Party in the USA,” the whirlwind romance between Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth, who co-starred in The Last Song, was over. Throw in some early onset Alzheimer’s and a make out scene in the rain, and this affair could practically be its own Nicholas Sparks novel.

Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem

This well paired celebrity couple first met on the set of 1992’s Jamón, Jamón. While the repetition of the word ham isn’t an established aphrodisiac, it clearly worked for Cruz and Bardem. After years of keeping their relationship on the down low, the insanely gorgeous couple finally tied the knot in a small, private ceremony in 2010. Cruz’s newfound status as Bardem’s wife was instant tabloid fodder; it also gave American audiences another fact to help differentiate her from Salma Hayek.

Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson

This on-again, off-again, will-they-or-won’t-they pair redefined the coy celebrity couple. The pale n’ pouty duo hit it off on the set of 2008’s first Twilight film. Between the comically glittery vampire makeup, the bulky dialogue, and all those hot, hot werewolves, Stewart and Pattinson’s chemistry lent the teen franchise an air of legitimacy. Off screen, the pair emphatically denied any romantic involvement. But despite being paid millions of dollars to helm a major movie franchise, the duo was unable to convincingly play that part of two people who weren’t doing it, and fans and paparazzo quickly saw through their charade.

In 2012, Stewart was caught cheating on Pattinson with her married Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders. After Us Weekly broke the affair, Stewart issued a heartbreaking statement admitting that, “This momentary indiscretion has jeopardized the most important thing in my life, the person I love and respect the most, Rob. I love him, I love him, I’m so sorry.” Unfortunately, unlike the Cullen clan, Robsten isn’t immortal: as far as we know, the former couple is permanently on the outs.
