Another pretrial hearing as been added for Louisville wide receiver Braden Smith during pretrial hearing in Jefferson County District Court concerning an assault charged filed in March, the court ruled Tuesday morning.

The next pretrial hearing is scheduled for Oct. 18, court officials said Tuesday morning. Smith was not in court at the time of the ruling.

A jury trial in the case is scheduled for Jan. 18.

In March, Smith was arrested by University of Louisville Police and charged with fourth-degree domestic violence and harassing communication. He was suspended indefinitely from the Cardinals at the time but participated in summer workouts and fall practices after pleading not guilty.

At the time of the arrest, in the early morning hours of March 6, Smith was accused of dragging a woman out of his residence at Clubhouse Apartments and throwing her out into the complex's breezeway. The woman told police she had broken up with him earlier in the week and had visited his apartment at the time of the alleged assault to tell him to leave her alone, after she said he'd been harrassing her with notes on her car and lengthy voice messages on her phone. The woman told police Smith had been violent toward her in the past and that the altercation that morning had left her with abrasions to her forehead, face, back, arms and forearms.

Smith has played in every game for Louisville this season, including starting each of the past two weeks.

Speaking at a Tuesday press conference ahead of Louisville's game this weekend at Boston College, coach Scott Satterfield said the situation was "something we handled this past spring, summer, in-house with him and did some things, suspensions and some other things,"

"We're always going to take any allegations serious and look at each case individually," Satterfield said. "That's what we did with Braden, and we felt it was time he was going to be able to come back and play. ... We handled that in-house and was able to bring him back right during camp."

During an arraignment March 7, Smith entered a not-guilty plea and didn't have an attorney listed at the time. According to current court records, he has since attained legal representation, though a call to his attorney Tuesday was not immediately returned.

EDITOR'S NOTE: The story has been changed to reflect that Smith's pretrial hearing wasn't delayed as previously published. An additional pretrial hearing was scheduled.
