Court records: Argument about groceries and money led to deadly shooting of Daniel Johnson

Update: Lamonteon Williams was convicted of murder and criminal recklessness in the August 2020 shooting of Daniel Johnson Jr., according to the Marion County Prosecutor's Office. A sentencing hearing is set for Williams on Nov. 7, 2022.

An argument over groceries and money led to a deadly shooting that killed 23-year-old Daniel Johnson, court records say.

Now, 23-year-old Lamonteon Williams has a hearing scheduled Wednesday related to Johnson's death on charges that include murder, attempted murder, criminal recklessness and theft of a firearm.

Williams lived with Johnson and two other roommates in a south side Indianapolis apartment, but had moved out a few days before the shooting. On Aug. 7, 2020, Williams returned to his former apartment complex in the 400 block of Sandra Lane to gather some of his belongings, according to the probable cause affidavit for his arrest.

Johnson walked into the kitchen, which prompted the deadly argument.

Williams began complaining when he saw food in the kitchen, saying that since he moved out, they had started buying groceries, a roommate told police. Williams brought up a debt the former roommate owed him, which that roommate said he had already paid back. As the roommate sat on the couch, Williams put a gun to his head and demanded money, the affidavit said.

They began to fight over the gun and multiple shots were fired.

Daniel Johnson, who also lived at the apartment, grabbed a gun from his room and fired at Williams, according to the affidavit.

At some point during the fight, the roommate fell to the ground and Williams shot him. The roommate, who survived, told police he heard multiple gunshots but didn't see anyone being shot.

Johnson's infant child was sitting on the couch at the time of the shooting, according to the affidavit.

When police arrived, the roommate immediately identified Williams as the shooter, the affidavit said. Johnson was pronounced dead on scene. An autopsy later ruled his death a homicide by means of multiple gunshot wounds.

Accused shooter found in the backseat of a Toyota Camry

Investigators at the scene learned a Toyota Camry was driving another person shot to the hospital, which they dispatched to other officers.

An officer pulled over a gold Toyota Camry that was speeding at South Emerson and Hornet Avenue. The officer found Williams in the backseat with gunshot wounds.

Officers learned the woman driving the Camry had been at the apartment complex when the shooting occurred. Her and her boyfriend, who was in the passenger seat of the Camry, saw Williams come out of the apartment.

The woman asked Williams if he needed help or wanted her to call 911. Williams got into the back seat and she began driving him to the hospital while her boyfriend gave Williams his t-shirt to apply pressure to the gunshot wounds. The woman called 911 during the drive.

Williams was taken to the hospital and treated for his injuries.

Two years later, his jury trial is scheduled for Wednesday, according to public court records.
