Court records: Confrontation led to exchange of gunfire at Castleton Square Mall

A confrontation led to the exchange of gunfire at the Castleton Square Mall last week that injured a teen, according to court records.

The series of events that ended with mall shoppers scrambling for safety Feb. 17 started with two groups of people: Curtis Wilson and his brother, and a group of yet-to-be-identified men.

Wilson, 18, is the only person known to be shot, but he is not the only one seen shooting on surveillance footage from the mall, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Surveillance cameras at the mall captured Wilson and his brother and the other group of men passing each other near an entrance. The two groups appeared to yell at each other in the video then Wilson took a gun from the waistband of his brother, the affidavit reads.

The other group of men continued to walk outside the mall as Wilson followed them and started firing the gun several times from inside the entrance, the surveillance video showed.

The video then showed an injured Wilson and his brother running back through the mall while two of the males in the other group fired weapons outside, according to the affidavit. Wilson was found by officers between the Zales Jewelry and Journeys Kids stores with a handgun nearby, according to court records.

All the men in the group outside the mall ran away, leaving behind a car key dropped on the ground, police said.

For his role, Wilson is facing a criminal recklessness charge in connection with the shooting, court documents indicate.

What Curtis Wilson, brother say happened, according to court records

In an interview with a detective, Wilson stated he was walking into the mall when he saw a group of men, with one reaching into a jacket. Wilson then approached the mall exit when one of the men pulled out a gun and he was shot in the left leg, Wilson said.

Outside the mall, police found several shell casings, three holes in the glass doors of the H&M store, the car keys, a receipt, shoe box and pretzel bag. Inside the mall near the entrance, there were shell casings and a trail of blood that led to Wilson.

Wilson’s brother stated they went to the mall to return shoes and get some food. The confrontation started when the other group stared at them as they walked past, Wilson's brother said.

The brother told officers Wilson “went over the edge," according to the affidavit.

Wilson was shot in the left thigh and treated at a hospital before he was transported to the Adult Detention Center.

An attorney for Wilson was not yet listed in online court records before publication of this story.

Shooting followed by another gun arrest at the mall

The day after the shooting an officer with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department spotted a man at the mall with a bulge on his waistline. The mall does not allow firearms on the property.

After fleeing officers on foot, the man was apprehended and a Glock with a machine gun conversion device was located on his person, according to a probable cause affidavit for the man’s arrest.

The man is facing preliminary charges of resisting law enforcement and possession of a machine gun, jail records show.

There have been previous shootings at the Castleton mall in northern Indianapolis and at least two shootings at Greenwood Park Mall, south of the city, in 2022.
