HOLLAND TWP. — Susan Sloop's granddaughters are serious about children's advocacy.

Ranging in age from 3-9, Sloop's five granddaughters operated their own lemonade stand on Friday, Aug. 5, in Macatawa Legends.

The four-hour event brought in more than $700 for the Children's Advocacy Center, a nonprofit dedicated to the prevention, advocacy and intervention against child sexual abuse.

"My girls are part of the 'Dream Team' at the Children's Advocacy Center," said Rachael DeWitt, whose three daughters ran the lemonade stand with the help of their cousins. "(That) means we commit to raising $1,000 through any sort of fundraising activity for the CAC."

DeWitt has been a counselor with the CAC for almost 12 years.

"It's a cause that's really important to me," she said.

But the cause is also important to her daughters and nieces, who painted boxes, made signs, baked cookies and developed a menu for the stand — which was ultimately their idea.

"We're definitely honoring the kids' ideas for how to raise money," DeWitt said, adding the girls will likely do another fundraiser at a later date.

"We're doing very well," DeWitt's 9-year-old daughter, Penny, said during the event. "It feels really nice and fun, too, at the same time. ... (Because) there's a lot of kids in need who need it."
