Coventry bound for semifinals

Jun. 4—COVENTRY — Elizabeth Mitchell struck out 17 batters — including 10 straight in one stretch — and also hit a 2-run home run in the bottom of the third inning on Friday as the Coventry softball team advanced to the semifinals of the Class S state tournament with a 6- 1 victory over Somers in the quarterfinals.

Mitchell has 208 strikeouts on the season for the third-seeded Patriots (20-4) with No. 200 coming on the second out of the top of the fourth inning.

Caroline Wesoloskie doubled with one out in the home third, advanced to third on an error and scored when Julia Boya reached safely on a bunt that was thrown past the catcher that brought home Wesoloskie from third and one batter later Mitchell put Coventry ahead 3-1 with a home run to left on a 1- 1 pitch.

Insurance was provided in the bottom of the sixth when the Patriots scored three unearned runs.

The sixth-seeded Spartans (18-7) scored in the top of the first on a RBI single by Chloe Mike.

Coventry, which is back in the semifinals for the first time since 2018, will meet No. 15 North Branford (18-7) on Monday or Tuesday at a site and time to be determined.

Top- seed Cromwell and No. 5 Old Lyme meet in the other semifinal with the winners to play for the Class S championship on Friday or Saturday.

In Lebanon, Old Lyme (20-6) scored a run in the top of the ninth inning for a 2- 1 quarterfinal win in nine innings over No 4 Lyman Memorial ( 18- 6).

Kassidy LaTour ( 2 hits) struck out eight, walked three and scattered five hits and allowed no earned runs in a complete- game for the Bulldogs.
