Coventry man crashes into pole, airlifted to hospital

Nov. 30—WILLIMANTIC — A Coventry man sustained several injuries after crashing his car into a pole at the intersection of Jackson and Peru Streets in Willimantic late Monday night.

According to Willimantic Fire Chief Marc Scrivener, his department responded to the scene at approximately 9:16 p.m. The Willimantic Police Department and medics from Windham Hospital also responded.

There was severe damage to both the car and the pole, with wires down in the roadway.

The driver was found in the front seat of the car on the passenger's side. The car's airbags were deployed and the driver did not wear his seat belt.

The driver was initially trapped in the car, but was able to exit the vehicle with assistance from the Willimantic Fire Department.

Bolivia Street and Peru Street were both closed as a result of the accident.

A LIFE STAR helicopter was requested and the man was brought to the hospital. The driver who hit the pole was a 21-year-old Coventry man. He suffered head, chest, leg and foot injuries from the accident.

Scrivener said the driver appeared to be traveling at a high speed and the car hit the pole sideways. The pole was broken in multiple places. Eversource was requested for the broken pole.

Scrivener said that he was unsure of how long Bolivia and Peru Streets were closed, however both were open on his way to work at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.
