Coventry schools group makes mark with community service this summer

A group of Coventry Local School District students are dedicating part of their summer break to giving others a helping hand.

Members of the district’s Comet Unity group, headed by Coventry High School basketball coach Devon McAfee, recently cleaned up the Firestone Park Community Center in Akron and gave the flag centerpiece a makeover.

The group worked with Akron Councilman Donnie Kammer and community members on the effort.

Throughout the summer, McAfee said, the Comet Unity club will work on projects in Coventry Township and district properties. The 36 members work with Keep Akron Beautiful, local businesses and churches, along with the Firestone Park YMCA, McAfee said.

The goal for the group is to give back to the community throu landscaping, clean-up duties, painting and other activities to contribute to the community.

“Giving back to the community is very important,” McAfee said. “It allows our future leaders to understand the importance of how to create a strong, safe and healthy environment.”
